Kanchana Fort

Pride of the Peshwas

The Kanchana fort, standing on the Ajantha-Saatmal Mountain range is believed to have been built to keep an eye on the trade route winding through the valley. The hill upon which it is perched soars to a height of 1368m or 4490 ft. The fort is divided into three parts and also showcases five water tanks that have been cut into the stone, two tombs and ruins of what might have been an entrance gate. After the fall of Trimbak, seventeen forts fell into British hands, the Kanchana being one among them.
